Busch Stadium Memories: #7-Boatman's Day 1993
I'm sure that some of you (probably just TQ and Scott, but you''re the only two who read this anyway) remember the old Boatman's Day they used to have a Busch back in the early to mid-90s. My experience at one of those cracks my Top 10 Memories.
The date was Saturday, June 12, 1993. We got to the game early, as there was a big tailgate party for those connected with Boatman's Bank in the old parking lot (where centerfield will be next season). I knew from the get-go that this was going to be a fun day. Considering that it was about an hour to go before the game even began and I had (just graduated from high school two weeks earlier) already drank about four beers (including one with Ken Reitz-he's a dork), got autographs from a number of former Cardinals, and had yet to get carded, I was liking my chances. Anyhoo, we get to the game, sneak down to field boxes, and allbedarn, I get served. Everything's going great until I pick up this from a conversation taking place between the three guys behind me:
"What you get him for?"
"Speeding and reckless driving."
"I don't know how many people I've caught speeding lately."
I kid you not, sitting right behind be and my stack of empty light blue Sports Service cups are three police officers. What do I do? I'm starting to get nervous when I do what any other cocky, 18-year-old with a bit of a buzz would do-I start talking to them. I tell them my name is Robbie Long and that I'm preparing for my senior year in college at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. I tell them that I'm majoring in criminal justice in hopes of becoming a state trooper. I go on and on. Before long, they're trying to convince me to me a Missouri state trooper instead of Illinois. They're going over all these details about their benefits compared to Illinois and so on. The only
thing they didn't do was buy me another Budweiser. By the time the game ended I had (and I wish I still had) two guys' business cards and they told me to call them if I had any questions or they could help me out. Eventually, we all shake hands and head for home (don't worry, I wasn't driving). The game itself was pretty good. The Cardinals pounded the Expos 13-3. They got homers from Gregg Jefferies, Ray Lankford, and Mark Whiten and Rheal Cormier was the winner. Chris Nabholz took the loss for Montreal.

That's great. I attended a few games when it was Boatman's Day, but I never got in the lot. What a neat blog. It reminded me of a time in junior college when 3 of us got caught getting out of the trunk of a big old car going to the drive-in movie. They asked our names before they made us pay, and I went last saying my name was Brent Anderton from Sesser. Then they asked me how to spell Anderton. I tried to spell it fast, but I probably didn't get it right. (He was also a friend of mine.) Keep bloggin'--this is great. I think Big Pietsch reads them, too. TQ
