In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, which marked the end of fighting in World War I.
(Remember your history teacher telling you that fighting ended at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month?)
In 1954, Congress changed the name of the November 11 event to Veterans Day. This was done to honor all those who served in WWII and Korea, as well as those who served in WWI.
